How to calculate your net worth

Net worth is everything you own minus everything you owe. To calculate it, add up your cash, accounts, savings, investments and the current value of property and other assets, then subtract all debts: loans, a mortgage, credit cards and money you owe to people. Repeat it once a month or once a quarter and watch the direction, not one number.

Step by step

Five steps to your net worth

  1. List what you own

Cash, cards, savings and deposits, investments, crypto, property, a car, a share in a business, money people owe you.

  2. Value each asset today

Balances as they are; investments and crypto at the current price; property and a car at a realistic sale price, with the date.

  3. List what you owe

Mortgage, loans, credit card balances, instalments, personal debts — the amount still to repay.

  4. Subtract

Net worth = total assets − total debts. Convert everything to one currency at the same date’s rate.

  5. Repeat regularly

Once a month or a quarter. The change between two dates says more than the figure itself.

Judgement calls

What to count and at what value

Your home: count it if you could sell it, at a realistic price, and count the mortgage against it. Some people keep two figures — with and without the home — because the home is not money they plan to spend.

A car loses value every year, so revalue it at least yearly. Things like furniture and electronics are usually left out: they are hard to sell at the price you paid.

Savings in dollars or euros: convert them at one official rate for the date, the same for every asset, so the change you see is your money and not a rate jump between two different sources.

Tools

Tracking net worth over time

A spreadsheet with one row per asset and one column per month works well and costs nothing. The effort is in updating the balances.

An app can update the account part for you. In Monnex, for example, Wealth is assets minus debts: account balances follow your operations, crypto gets a market price, other assets keep the value and date you set, and totals use dated National Bank of Ukraine rates.

Questions

Net worth questions

Is a negative net worth bad?

It is common early on, for example with a student loan or a new mortgage. What matters is whether it grows from month to month.

How often should I calculate my net worth?

Monthly or quarterly. More often mostly shows price noise; less often makes it hard to see what changed.

Do I include my pension savings?

If they are yours and have a value you can see, yes — but note them separately, because you cannot use them now.

What is the difference between net worth and income?

Income is what you earn over a period; net worth is what you have at a point in time. A high income with high spending can leave a low net worth.
